How I work

Portrait of Dieter Möss

Dieter MössSenior Product Designer & UX Specialist · Design systems and AI · remote

I have been self-employed since 2000, with some periods of full-time employment in between, at times for several clients in parallel. Since 2012 I have been building digital products for clients including BMW, Audi, Miele, HVV and Techniker Krankenkasse. My work spans everything from the first user interview to the finished frontend, with a focus on design systems that reliably support multiple teams and products.

Since 2025, I have also been designing and building systems with AI agents. The largest of them is in production at a Munich publisher, where seven agents handle research, drafting and fact-checking while the editorial team approves the results at three points.

Principles

  • Verifiable, not impressive.A number I can’t back up doesn’t go on the slide or into the article. Better one claim fewer than one that falls apart at the first follow-up question.
  • Research as the basis for decisions.Decisions are based on research and testing, which keeps them independent of whoever argues most forcefully in the room.
  • Metrics as the yardstick.I track costs, errors and usage wherever they can be measured.
  • Adoption by the team.A design system proves itself when the team uses it consistently in daily work. That is the standard I apply to components, tokens and documentation.
  • Design and implementation from a single source.I support projects beyond the handoff and into frontend implementation. Knowing both disciplines makes it possible to spot discrepancies between design and code early on.
  • AI as a well-designed system.I deploy AI with clear responsibilities, defined handoffs and a plan for when things go wrong.
  • People make the call (human in the loop).I use AI specifically where it relieves the team. Anything that gets published or shipped is approved by a person.
  • Four-eyes principle.Texts, code and design are always reviewed by an independent second party with its own review mandate.
  • Pilot before the large-scale project.A pilot under real conditions yields more reliable insights than any concept paper.
  • Documentation that ensures independence.Thorough documentation ensures that the team can continue working autonomously without difficulty once the project ends.
  • Restrained design.Design serves the product, in interfaces as much as in copy.

FAQ

Who is Dieter Möss?

I am a Senior Product Designer & UX Specialist focused on design systems and AI. I have been self-employed since 2000 and building digital products since 2012 for clients including BMW, Audi, Miele, HVV and Techniker Krankenkasse, from the first user interview to the finished frontend.

What exactly do you do?

My work covers UX research and usability testing, concept development and product strategy, design systems with components and design tokens, and frontend implementation in HTML, CSS and JavaScript. It also includes AI in the design workflow and systems built with AI agents.

Do you work remotely?

Yes, I work remotely from the Munich area.

Which industries have you worked in?

I have worked in home appliances (Miele, BSH), mobility (HVV Switch), healthcare (TK app, weed.de), automotive (Audi, BMW), energy (Vattenfall), retail, and media and publishing.

What is a design system, and when is it worth it?

A design system is a shared toolkit of components, design tokens and rules that gives design and development a common foundation. It pays off as soon as several teams or products need to stay consistent. Now that AI tools are involved in implementation, it matters even more, because an agent only follows rules that are documented.

Can AI agents work with a design system?

Yes, provided it is designed for that. This requires machine-readable component descriptions, tokens with a documented purpose and automated checks in the pipeline. I describe the approach in the series “Design Systems and AI” under Insights.

Have you built AI systems that run in production?

Yes. For a Munich publisher, I developed an editorial system of seven AI agents that handles research, drafting and fact-checking. Content is published only after the editorial team has approved it at three points. Details are on the AI editorial system page.

Is accessibility part of your work?

Yes. I work to WCAG, which the German Accessibility Strengthening Act (BFSG) has made mandatory for many digital products since June 2025. I gained experience with it on HVV Switch, the TK app and Audi.

For projects that need a whole team, I work with methusalab. Professional notes from my projects are collected under Insights.
